Happy Friday Preschool Families!

Happy Friday Preschool Families!

I hope this finds you all doing very well and staying healthy! Unfortunately this week was a very bad health week for my dear husband and so I was pulling double duty with mommy AND daddy responsiblities. As a result, the blog update went by the wayside. My apologies!

We started a Dental Theme this week as most of you saw with the brushing charts coming home. I hope this encourages your precious little one brush twice a day. If they bring the chart back next week Wednesday, I will give them a little treat...and it is NOT candy;) Wouldn't that defeat my march against those nasty little sugar bugs!

We started our week of Lent with Ash Wednesday. I have been focusing on the meaning of Lent with the children. Outside the classroom is our Lenten Word Wall that shows the concepts we talk about that goes along with this blessed and somber season.

GVSA Field Trip:

What a GREAT time we had last Friday at the Granville Studio of Visual Arts! The children did such a stupendous time and did such a wonderful job with their art projects. And everyone was on their best behavior...great job everyone! I truly hope the art piece your sweet little one created are ones that you cherish for a very long time. I am working on learning how to download pics onto our blog. I am shooting for next week to have them some pictures posted.

PRESCHOOL DIRECTORY:

If you did not get a preschool directory, please let Mrs. Burd or Mrs. Bloom know as soon as possible. We have a large quantity left and have a feeling one class did not get them. Thanks!

What's up for the Week:

**We will continue our Dental Health theme for next week. Keep on encouraging your child to practice regular brushing. We will continue to talk about how we can keep our teeth happy and healthy.
**Our letter of the week is: R

** We will have a dental hygentist come in next week. This community helper will talk to the children about her job and how we can take care of our teeth.

** We will focus on the meaning of Lent. In POLAR BEARS we will focus on the words: sins and fast. In PENGUINS and SEALS, we will focus in on the meaning of Lent.

ST. FRANCIS PRESCHOOL HAS A FACEBOOK PAGE!

We just got a facebook page on Thursday! I still have A LOT of work to do on it. If you know of someone looking for a quality Christian preschool, let them know that we have a Facebook page. At this point no one can post, but I will be posting pictures and events on the page. I am not exactly tech savy so have patience with me;)

ONLY A FEW OPENINGS LEFT IN SEALS for 2012-2013!

We still a few openings in our Seals 3 year old class for the upcoming 2012-2013 school year. If you know of someone who is looking for a 3 year old class, please let them know that we a few spaces left!

Concluding Thoughts:

Thanks to all the parents that chaperoned the GVSA trip on Friday. We truly appreciate your help and support.
We hope that this Lenten season brings you closer to Christ. God bless you and your families!

Happy St. Valentine Day!!!

Happy St. Valentine's Day Tremendous Preschool Parents!

The story goes that Fr. Valentine lived during a time in which Christians were being prosecuted for their faith. Regardless of this danger, Fr. Valentine and his faithful friends continued to feed and clothe the poor and bring Jesus and His word to many . Unfortunately, someone turned Fr. Valentine into the officials and thus he was jailed. Instead of being angry and sad, Fr. Valentine prayed continuously for those who he helped and those who helped him with the corporal works of mercy. After prayer one day, Fr. Valentine decided to send little notes to his friends telling them how much Jesus loves them and giving them words of hope. Seeing the pigeons that sat on his windows, Fr. Valentine trained them to be homing pigeons. He then wrapped his little notes in string and tied them to the pigeons necks and had them deliver them to each of his friends. This is why we send notes or cards of love and encouragement to those around us that mean so much on February 14th, his feast day!
Happy St. Valentines Day! God's blessing upon all of you this beautiful day;)

Request for Polar Bear Parents as pick up time;)

Hello Outstanding Polar Parents:

I have a request by the afternoon elementary pick-up teachers. They have asked that Polar Bear parents try to shoot as close to 2:55 as you can instead of before to get in the pick-up line. Thanks for your help on this.

Have a wonderful week!

LAST call on Preschool Directory !

Hello Preschool Parents,

PRESCHOOL DIRECTORY:
For the last 2 weeks, I have had a sign up sheet on top of the cubbies for those families who would like their name, address, and home phone included in the preschool directory. I wanted to give everyone one last call on signing up on the sign up sheet. PLEASE note, that I can not include your name in this directory unless you sign up on the sign up sheet!(this is essentially your consent to include your info) All families will get a directory, but if you do not sign up to have your name included in it, I will not include your information. This directory will go to print on THURSDAY. After Wednesday afternoon, if you have NOT signed up, you will not have your info. included. Thanks so much for your understanding on this matter.

St. Valentine Party:
Please note that the St. Valentine "party" will be small and very limited on time. I will still conduct class on this day so our schedule AND routine will still be pretty much the same. If your little sweetheart would like to share a treat and/or cards, it will need to be brought with them to school the day of their scheduled party (at the time of their arrival at school) so that they can pass it out during our "sharing of the love" card exchange. Thank you so much for your support and respect on this policy;)

Thanks so much and may your week be SUNNY!

A Wonderful Week!

Hello Marvelous Families!

What a super week we have had! We started talking about snow, ice and snowflakes even though we haven't seen much of it! This week we discussed some of the fun things we do with snow...making snowmen, snow angels, fort making! We have our very own snowman in our classroom to dressup. So if we can't make one for real, we can at least pretend to have one and dress him!
I am told the groundhog saw his shadow so 6 more weeks of winter...if you can call this winter! During our discussion about Winter, I have introduced the children to the words (and their meanings): precipitation and temperature. I encourage you to discuss these when we actually have snow, rain, sleet, etc. As well as discuss the changing temperature...and it there has been a definite change it temperature lately! We will continue this week with more discussion about snow, snowflakes and ice. I will have a bit more focus on the science of snow and ice this week. Most classes will have snow and ice science with me during station time.
Here is more on things that will be happening in the next week or so......

PROGRESS REPORTS:
Progress reports will go out this week in your child's folder. SEALS will get theirs on Thursday and PENGUINS & POLAR BEARS will get theirs on Friday.
I am so pleased with everyones progress! As I assessed and analyzed last fall's assessment with this current winter assessment...I am so excited of the GROWTH every single one of the children have made! Wow!

Another SUPER-DUPER question...
I had a GREAT question this week from one of our super parents. This was one I had had throughout the year and thought I would share....

" I notice my child doesn't bring home alot of work papers displaying skills that you work on in class. Do you do worksheets to reinforce the skills you are working on?"
This is a two part answer so I will break my response down in a couple of parts.
1. ) No, I do not use alot of worksheets and never have as an educator. My personal philosphy on this is that children learn much more by more tactial work with the skills we work on. For example, on Friday, one of the skills we are working on in Penguins is Letter Idenification and Sound Identification. Instead of a worksheet, the children did a letter hop. I had all the letters of the alphabet on the floor and the children had to hop to the letter we yelled out. For those students who knew the letters then I yelled out the sounds they had to jump to. Another skill, we work on in all classes, is matching the upper case and lower case letters. So instead of a worksheet, I have filled my sensory table up with cotton balls (snow). I have cut out snowflakes hidden under the cotton balls with both lower and upper case letters. The students then have to root through the "snow" to find both letters and match them up.
I do not believe children have to always create product (worksheets) to learn or to show they are learning.
2.) To conserve paper and resources, Mrs. Bloom and I laminate much of our writing activites such as name writing, shape recognition, telephone number identification, etc. so we can use it over and over again. This saves our environment and saves money on paper. If you ever would like to see these items, please feel free to ask. I would be more than happy to share this with you:)
This was an outstanding question! Hopefully this helped clear up any questions regarding this topic. Keep those questions coming!!

St. Valentines Day
We will have a small St. Valentines Day party. St. Valentines Day falls on a Tuesday so the SEALS and POLAR BEARS will have their party on Tuesday the 14th (the day of Valentines Day)
The PENGUINS will have theirs on Wednesday Feb. 15th.
We will make little Valentines bags in all classes for their cards. SEALS have 11 students; PENGUINS have 14 students; POLAR BEARS have 11 students. I will have a sign up sheet in the hall if your child would like to bring a treat. If you would require a roster, please let me know.

SCHOOL in SESSION on February 8th:
Due to our educational conference cancelling, WE WILL have school on Wednesday, February 8th.

On a Personal Note...
About a year ago, my mother had melanoma of the uterus. We found out on Saturday that her cancer is back. I humbly ask for your prayers for her and my family as she carries this cross. Thank you so much!

May your week be a very peaceful and blessed one!
